About capito

We are professionals for easy language and accessibility

We translate information into easy-to-understand language, offer trainings and develop digital solutions around the topic of comprehensibility.

Here you can learn more about our mission and our history. You can also get to know our team!

Our mission

We want a world where all people can say, “I get it!”

For many people, most of the publicly available information is difficult to understand.

We want to change that. Because understanding information is the prerequisite for a self-determined life.

We want a society in which no one is excluded. We want accessibility for all.

Our story

We are experts in easy language and accessibility. Our knowledge comes from over 20 years of practical experience, science and research.

We have helped to shape Easy Language in the German-speaking world from the very beginning.

We want information to really be understood. That’s why we work closely with review groups. After all, only the target group knows what is understandable.

Our goal is a world in which all people can inform themselves transparently and in a way that is easy to understand.

1999

The capito founding duo Walburga Fröhlich and Klaus Candussi start translating texts into easy-to-understand language. Our first work is the mission statement of Lebenshilfe.

Shortly thereafter, we develop the “Gütesiegel Leicht Lesen”. This “seal for Easy Reading” certifies that the capito quality standard has been met.

2005

In Austria and Germany, an exchange on Easy Language begins. Together with other organizations and self-advocates we found the Netzwerk Leichte Sprache (Network for Easy Language).

In order to offer our products and services nationwide, we are developing a social franchise network. The first location next to capito Graz is in beautiful Vorarlberg, in the west of Austria.

2011

We develop the capito criteria catalog based on the set of rules for Easy Language. It comprises 160 criteria. The criteria are based on science, research and practice and are continuously developed further.

We want to pass on our knowledge and know-how to other people. For this purpose, we offer the course for easy-to-understand language and accessible information.

2021

We develop capito.ai. The tool for Easy Language helps you simplify texts. It checks texts for comprehensibility and provides practical simplification tips.

capito and the SDGs

capito was developed by atempo.

capito was a key reason why atempo was named an SDG Pioneer in 2016 for its “particularly innovative contribution” to achieving the SDGs.

The SDGs (“Sustainable Development Goals”) comprise 17 goals that are intended to ensure sustainable development worldwide on an economic, social and ecological level. The SDGs were developed by the United Nations (UN) and adopted at the UN General Assembly in 2015.

capito contributes to the following goals:

  • 4: Quality education
  • 8: Decent work and economic growth
  • 10: Reduced inequalities

As part of the Global Compact Network, we are committed to regular reporting. More about this can be found in our impact report (in German) and on the website of the Global Compact Network.
